Could your nail polish get you sick?

June 30, 2009

YOU SHOULD KNOW!

nail-polish-lacquer_250x250The ‘Big 3′ of harmful chemicals used in many of today’s top brand polishes are Formaldehyde, DBP (Dibutyl Phthalate)  and Toluene.  The chemicals are a hot topic for  fodder and debate among nail professionals and dermatologists. The reason these chemicals are so popular with manufacturers is that they are successful in extending the wear of your manicure while hardening your nails. But there is a heavy price to pay for that- your health!  The preservative properties that go along with painting your nails with these toxins are multiple.

Formaldehyde: is a carcinogen and a common indoor air pollutant. Found in many household products such as glues, adhesives, paper product coatings, and insulation materials.  Inhaling the fumes can result in watery eyes, headache, burning in the throat, and labored breathing. It has caused cancer in the nose and throats of lab animals.

Dibutyl Phthalate: is used to soften plastic and is known to affect hormone function. Studies have linked phthalates to early puberty in girls, uterine problems in women and low sperm counts in men. Repeated and heavy exposure to dibutyl phthalate may cause nausea and/or vomiting, tearing of the eyes, dizziness, and headache. Long-term exposures may cause damage to kidneys and the liver.

Toluene: The common use is to boost the octane in gasoline. This toxin has shown to affect the nervous system with symptoms like tiredness, confusion, weakness, drunken-type actions, and memory loss. It can cause liver damage, skin irritation and in high levels may affect the kidneys.

All of these ingredients are baned in all of Europe and Japan but are still being reviewed by the under-staffed, over-worked and ever-so-slow U.S. FDA.Dermelect Peptide Infused Nail Treatments
